Citizen Lab Senior Researcher Sarah McKune will participate in the New York University School of Law Bernstein Institute for Human Rights Annual Symposium 2017. This year, the conference will be held on April 13-14th at Vanderbilt Hall, 40 Washington Square South, New York, NY 10012, around the organizing theme of “Defending Dissent: Civil Society and Human Rights in the Global Crackdown.”
The 2017 annual conference leverages the interdisciplinary strengths of the Robert L. Bernstein Institute for Human Rights and draws together leading human rights activists, lawyers, and scholars from countries including China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Russia, South Africa, and Turkey to spotlight strategies and tactics to safeguard crucial spaces for dissent. These strategies encompass litigation, legal empowerment, network building, and leveraging the Internet as forms of resistance. Speakers will share stories of resistance and build solidarity to defend human rights in the face of rising repression.
Sarah will join Panel 6 on “Technology, Business & Human Rights,” from 10:45am – 12:15pm on April 14th in the Greenberg Lounge, Vanderbilt Hall, where she will speak with other panelists on Internet governance and the responsibilities of technology companies to respect human rights. The presenters will then explore legal and policy measures to hold the commercial spyware industry accountable for state surveillance of human rights defenders. The panel will be moderated by Michael H. Posner, and will include Nate Cardozo of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Danna Ingleton of Amnesty International, and Jason Schutz of NYU School of Law.
