Citizen Lab Director Ron Deibert, former Post-Doctoral Fellow Stefania Milan and Senior Security Analyst Seth Hardy will participate in a one-day conference hosted by the International Relations Society at the University of Toronto. The 2013 Annual Conference explores internet security and hacking in an international relations context.

Deibert will give the keynote address; Milan will participate in the first panel, Hacktivism and Democracy-Building: Good or Bad?, which will discuss the exploits of the hacktivist group known as Anonymous; and Hardy will join a panel on Cyberwarfare: State and Non-State Actors, which will discuss the fact that state and non-state actors are becoming targets and perpetrators of cyber-attacks.

About Stefania Milan

Stefania Milan studied communication sciences at the University of Padova, Italy, and holds a PhD in Political and Social Sciences from the European University Institute. Her research interests include digital technologies and participation, social movements, radical internet activism, and the interplay between technologies and society. She enjoys experimenting with digital, participatory and action-oriented research methods, and seeks to find ways of bridging research with policy and action. Stefania taught communications governance, digital technologies, and digital research methods at the University of Lucerne, Switzerland, and at the Central European University, Hungary. She has worked extensively in international media outlets and has been involved in media activism projects.

About Seth Hardy

Seth Hardy is a Senior Security Analyst at the Citizen Lab, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto. Prior to the Citizen Lab, he worked for a large anti-virus vendor. Seth has worked extensively on analysis of document-based malware and AV evasion methods. Other areas of experience include: provably secure cryptography, random number generators, and network vulnerability research. Seth has spoken at a number of security conferences including Black Hat, DEF CON, SecTor, and the CCC. He holds degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Mathematics and Computer Science.
